Art on the London Underground: 150th anniversary

On 9 January 2013, London Underground celebrated 150 years since the first underground journey took place between Paddington and Farringdon on the Metropolitan Railway.

Since then the London Underground has been a platform for several artists to present their artwork to the public.

Art on the Underground's newest project attends to the 150th anniversary of London's underground.

On the 10th of january 1863 the first underground steam train rode between Paddington and Farringdon.

 

The tube as a place for art - this idea was developed in 1908 of  the former administrative officer Frank Pick. He was employed by the carriers of the different tube lines to develop the commercialisation of London's underground. In spite of the hype of the Metropolitan line, the three deep and pricy lines, Bakerloo-; Pickadilly- and today's Northernline didn't attract enough passengers.

 Pick then came up with the idea of eye-catching graphic posters to disentitle the passenger's scepticism.

Until now London's Underground is a public art's platform. To mark the 150th anniversary of LU in 2013 there will be artworks presented in each of the 270 tube stations. From large-scale video installations to fordable take away tube maps designed by artists like Mark Wallinger or Tracey Emin.

Definitely one reason to travel to London this year!

Happy belated New Year!

 Ha ha... yes, it's sunday. It's the 6th of january. And YES New Year's eve is almost a week ago. So what?! Happy New Year! This year, pardon, last year all I wanted was a quiet New Year's eve with my closest friends. No huge party, not too many people and no pressure in having THE party. It turned out to be the nicest 31st of december I ever had. I had my best friend who is luckily my room mate too and my best former school friends invited to Berlin over New Year's eve. It was kind of traditional: brunch, movie, nap^^, coffee and "Berliner" or as the Berliner say "Pfannkuchen", dinner, a walk to the Victoria park, champagne at midnight, party untill late at night, bed time.

It was perfect. And I'm so glad to have had my best friends at my place. Thank you so much for coming over although it took a bit time due to the long distances between us all. But we have to get used to not seeing each other so often anymore. We're turning into grown-ups and a lot of things are changing in the way we don't want things to change. But we know we have to go our own ways now. So thank you for spending the last day of 2012 with me. And I hope we'll stay in touch.

Lloyd Simmonds - put on my make-up, please!

Dear Lloyd Simmonds can't I put you in my make-up kit and carry you with me everyday? Waking up at 6 am from monday to friday doesn't make it so easy to put on make-up or even to get proper looking clothes on. BUT if make-up artist Lloyd Simmonds would be there for you every morning a girl's life would be so much easier!

Since 2010 the canadian artist Lloyd Simmonds works as creative director for YSL-Beauté and is responsible for the development  of the make-up collections. Before that the 50-year old make-up artist used to work as a visagist for different shootings and campaigns.
Becoming a make-up artist was more of a coincidence. Growing up in a small canadian town Simmonds wanted to become a ballett dancer and studied at the Royal Winnigpeg Ballett school. Unfortunately his dream of a dancing career was over after he unluckily had a complicated bone fracture at an accident on slippery street.
Through the preperations for auditions and shows Simmonds became fond of putting on make-up and was thinking of making this line to his career. "Since I was fifteen I have been reading fashion magazines. I'm obsessed with fashion photography by "Penn" and " Avedon" and if I won't become a photographer then I can at least become a make-up artist, to be a part of the crowd"(source: Vogue Germany).

Christmas Card Time

 Tomorrow it's already December and there're only 24 days left until Christmas. Woow, it's makes me so exicited. I've finially got a day off from work which I urgently needed. Working 10 hours a day, 6 days a week really makes you mad sometimes. So today I used my day to practice the piano and to prepare little x-mas goodies for my best friends. I just finished doing the packaging of the presents which I have to mail my friends and right now I'm working on their Christmas cards. Aren't they pretty? I just used a bunch of old magazines, and papers. When I need to write cards I never buy them!! I think that's so unpersonal so I prefer making them myself. It's much nicer recieving a self-made greeting card no matter if  it's ugly or not, it's far better than just getting one at the next shop you find.

I hardly recommend to drink marzipan tea during cold winter days to keep you warm and cozy. I love this flavour and the sweet smell making you feel warm while making Christmas cards.
